CPD WORKSHOP
Exploring Privilege and Otherness in Counselling and Psychotherapy
About the workshop
We live in a challenging age with the death of George Floyd and subsequent marches across the world against racism, the struggles of the MeToo movement, the campaigns for equal rights for the LGBTQ community, and the rise of disability fearists. Yet all these efforts towards equality in the face of varying types of oppression speak loudly of the voices of the others and their need to be heard and acknowledged. Within our trainings though, as counsellors and psychotherapists, issues of difference and diversity and privilege and otherness have been very slow in turning our considerable talents towards exploring and understanding the complexities of these overlapping issues.
This one day workshop will therefore draw on intersectional theory in order to help us understand how we each one of us hold aspects of privilege and otherness within our complex intersectional identities. The day will begin with a presentation, followed by a experiential exercise within which we will explore this sort of material and the afternoon will therefore expand on what we have learned during the morning using a number of skills common to counselling and psychotherapy to hear the voices of the other.
Who is it for?
The workshop is open to all counsellors, students and supervisors.
